![]() We have a fun new book in our online store. The new book, Your Name In Cherokee, is an interesting 50 page booklet, that contains listings of names in English, the Cherokee phonetics of that name according to the Cherokee syllabary, and how the name is written in Cherokee syllables. A name in Cherokee is presented by the tones or sounds of that name. Its spelling in English has no bearing on its sound in Cherokee. Mr Robinson is a retired school teacher and former Education Director at the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. "We (11 or 12) had a tremendous day Saturday when our CAHR group went to Colcord, Oklahoma and visited the Talbot Library & Museum. We took the museum exhibits in, stopped and ate lunch in their neat little school house, devoured more information in the library and headed back to Cincinnati with a few extra pieces of paper or copied notes for history or genealogy", one attendee posted on Facebook. Continuing the Facebook post, "A special thanks to Ms. Grace, Donna Clark and our own Glenita Guthrie. They are an awesome bunch of ladies and so helpful in our research. Come down to Cincinnati on August 27 where our monthly meeting will be about "Old Tools – “Building a Frontier Town”. Bring your tool to exhibit, and listen to the fascinating history behind these family pieces. See you then in beautiful, historical downtown Cincinnati." The Talbot Library and Museum was so happy to have CAHR visit us! We had a great time hosting the Goingsnake District Heritage Association meeting on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Talbot Library & Museum. A great group met in the historical Springtown Schoolhouse on our property to hear guest speaker, Assistant Professor Julie L. Reed, talk about her newly published book, "Serving the Nation - Cherokee Sovereignty and Social Welfare, 1800-1907". Julie teaches in the Department of History at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Some of Julie's research for the book was done at the Talbot Library! We were honored to host the meeting and welcome Professor Reed back to the Talbot Library and Museum.
![]() The Talbot Library and Museum recently received this Cherokee Numeral Clock as a donation from Mrs. Ann Cherry. Ann is a current employee of Gates Corporation (formerly Gates Rubber Company) and has worked at the company for many years. Former Cherokee Chief Chad Smith donated the clock to Gates Rubber Company, in honor of his father, who was a long time employee of Gates. The Gates Rubber Company gave the clock to Ann Cherry and now she has donated it to the Talbot Library & Museum. We are so grateful to Mrs. Cherry for generously donating the clock for the benefit of visitors at the Talbot Library and Museum. The clock is hanging near the entry way. It is a practical representation of Cherokee culture and looks great in our library! ![]() Julie L. On April 22, Teresa Allcorn, hosted local student Tyler Luedecke at the Talbot Library & Museum (TL&M). Teresa is a long-time TL&M board member, genealogist, and historian. Tyler shadowed Teresa throughout the day and learned about the exhibits, setting them up, and arranging displays. He even assisted with arranging the newest military exhibit at TL&M.
Tyler expressed his thanks in a nicely worded letter to Teresa (see photo). Teresa enjoyed the day with Tyler and we all are so happy that we can continue to share the deep history and rich heritage of the people, events, and places of this region with others! Thanks for visiting us Tyler!
