Pryor Creek, originally named Cooy-y-yah (Cherokee for huckleberry) was incorporated as a city in 1894. Pryor is the county seat of Mayes County, Oklahoma. It has a rich history dating from early days in Indian Territory. Pryor became a major industrial community during WW II, becoming home to a massive ammunition ordnance plant, which later became the largest industrial park in Oklahoma. In 1942 Pryor’s downtown business district was destroyed by a deadly tornado. The author has written a fascinating history of his hometown, and has been researching its history for over 40 years. Paperback, 128 pages, including 210 black and white photos.
