By D. Bruce Howell.
This is Dr. Howell’s newest book, just published this year. He previously wrote two volumes-“Echoes From The Past” about people and events in Northeastern Oklahoma history. The book covers the earlier history of the area, beginning with the explorers, and history of the Three Forks area where the three rivers, Arkansas, Grand and Verdigris all meet. “1806” describes the many events in that century leading up to Oklahoma statehood in 1907 in what is now northeast Oklahoma. Of course, it includes the Cherokees being relocated, and a new Cherokee Nation being born. “Internal strife developed over tribal treaties, devastation of the Civil War, followed by a period of lawlessness in the Territory”. Despite all the conflicts, the Cherokee were able to form a democratic government, establish the first school system west of the Mississippi and develop laws as the economy improved leading up to statehood. The developments of these events and the people involved are described in this very interesting book. Paperback, 244 pages, inc. index
