Tribal citizen-scholars of the Eastern Shawnee collaborated with academic allies in developing this book, a collection of eleven essays and five interviews. Stephen Warren, an associate professor of history at the University of Iowa, is the lead historian for the federally funded project of cultural preservation that inspired this edited collection. All of the contributors hope to “inspire future historians to take up the history of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, their Absentee Shawnee and Shawnee neighbors, and the rich multiethnic heritage of eastern Oklahoma more generally” (p. 9). The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is one of three (3) federally-recognized Shawnee tribes and are headquartered near Wyandotte, OK.
