Ned Christie: The Creation of an Outlaw and Cherokee Hero

$29.95Price
By Devon A. Mihesuah
This is a long awaited book about local legend, Ned Christie. Much has been written about him, but the author has done extensive research and presents some new material. The late, Roy Hamilton, Cherokee historian and Christie family member, contributed information to the book, and endorsed the authors research. More than a biography, Ned Christie traces the making of an American myth. Ned/Nede Wade Christie(1852-1892) was an involved member of the Cherokee Nation, and served as a Councilman, but was accused in 1887 of the killing of Deputy U.S.Marshall Dan Maples. He evaded capture for five years, and in 1892 his home was dynamited, by a posse of U.S. Marshalls, and Ned was shot and killed. There continues to be considerable controversy about Ned and his story. This is fascinating reading about the Christie family genealogy, and life in the Cherokee Nation in the 19th Century. Hardback, w/dust cover, 272 pages, including bibliography and index.
