Virgil Talbot was the founder of the Talbot Library & Museum.  He was also publisher of the Goingsnake Messenger and TL&M Genealogy magazines. Virgil's motto was "Preserving a Bit of History".  He was very dedicated to this purpose.  He worked very hard at collecting and preserving historical and genealogical material that would be available for generations. Our Library Founder, Virgil Talbot, worked steadily in politics designing leaflets, writing editorials, and taking stands on issues and candidates. He wrote a book called "A Bit Of History" (available in our online store and at Talbot Library and Museum) that chronicles some of his political efforts, acquaintances, and correspondence.... and many other of his stories and writings about history. On page 131 of the book, Talbot chronicles the moment he shook the hand of President Lyndon Johnson around 1964, as depicted in the photo. Our Founder Virgil Talbot was the founder of the Talbot Library & Museum. He was born on March 13, 1927. In addition to founding the Talbot Library and Museum, Virgil Talbot was also publisher of the Goingsnake Messenger and TL&M Genealogy magazines. He also wrote several books regarding his family and his wife's (Avis) family, as well as local history books and poetry. Virgil's motto was "Preserving a Bit of History". He was very dedicated to this purpose. He worked very hard at collecting and preserving historical and genealogical material that would be available for generations. Mr. Talbot belonged to several historical societies including the Cherokee National Historical Society. He was placed on the Historical Society Board by the Cherokee Nation--the first non-Indian to hold a position on the board. Virgil was very proud of this honor. Virgil Talbot died June 17, 1998. He was posthumously named to the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame in 2005 by the Oklahoma Historical Society. He was an avid collector of historical records of this area and was so very proud of the Talbot Library and Museum.

Talbot’s is part Museum and part Research Library, located on a two-acre property in Colcord, Delaware County, Oklahoma. The property includes the historic one-room Springtown Schoolhouse, the Adair Building containing large museum items & farm machinery, a Blacksmith Shop, Post Office Building and General Store. The main building consists of a Bookstore, a Museum of historical items of the area, as well as the Walkingstick Research Library room. The Library contains a unique, large collection of materials relating, but not exclusive to, Cherokee genealogy and history. Our focus is on Indian Territory, Northeast Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. The Talbot Bookstore is an important part of the facility, offering new and used books for sale on the above subjects. These books are available for purchase on site, as well as online at our updated website, www.talbotlibrary.org . On the website, you will find a link to our E-Bay bookstore containing many other valuable used books. Also, contents and ordering information for back issues of our publication, T.L.&M. Genealogy as well as the Goingsnake Messenger publication are listed on the website. We are an independent non-profit (501-C3) organization that does not receive government funding. We operate through donor contributions, book sales and occasional grant funding. he Talbot Library and Museum is organized to own possess and operate the Talbot Library and Museum for the use and benefit of the community, its citizens, and all others who are interested for educational and historical purposes. The Talbot Library and Museum specializes in historical and genealogical research material of Northeast Oklahoma, Northwest Arkansas and Cherokee Territory.   The facility also publishes TL&M Genealogy and is home to the Goingsnake Messenger.   Our Mission To Preserve "A Bit Of History" The Talbot Library and Museum in Colcord, Delaware County, Oklahoma was established by Virgil and Avis Talbot in 1987 as a free museum and library available for research of the area and local and Native American history. The Talbot Library and Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit facility operated by a Board of Trustees. The Board is dedicated to managing this valuable resource in a professional manner. The Talbot Library and Museum is organized to own, possess, and operate the Talbot Library and Museum for the use and benefit of the community, its citizens, and all others who are interested for educational and historical purposes. The Talbot Library and Museum specializes in historical and genealogical research material of Northeast Oklahoma, Northwest Arkansas and Cherokee Territory. The facility also publishes TL&M Genealogy. The Library and Museum operates solely on contributions/donations and sales of Book Store and Gift Shop items. Its goal is to "Preserve a Bit of History".
